The Trolls Who Fear Princess Diana’s Shadow

Feb 17, 2026

There’s an ugly corner of the internet where misogynistic trolls spit venom at Diana, Princess of Wales. They call her names. They sexualise her. They try to drag her down to their level. But the intensity of their hatred gives the game away: they know exactly who she was.

They know Diana refused to defer. They know she fought for her own survival. They know she exposed the monarchy’s emotional coldness long before anyone else dared.

And they know the public still sees her as the light.

That’s why they attack her. It’s pure panic.

The panic got louder when Prince William publicly described his mother as “paranoid” — a word that landed like a betrayal. The public pushed back instantly. They remembered the context of the Panorama interview. They remembered the pressure she was under. And they remembered that she was telling the truth.

William’s troll army rushed to defend him, but they couldn’t erase the cultural memory of Diana, the woman who refused to be crushed.

But what really enrages them is this: online, it’s widely accepted that Harry is Diana’s son in spirit, and William is Charles’s. Harry inherited Diana’s warmth, her instinct to protect the vulnerable, her refusal to be controlled by the press. William inherited the institution.

It’s a meme. A shorthand. A cultural truth people recognise without needing to explain it.

And the trolls hate it.

They hate that Harry is seen as Diana’s true heir. They hate that Meghan is compared to her, another woman who refused to shrink herself.

They hate that even Archie and Lilibet, children, are spoken of as carrying the Spencer genes.

imageBecause deep down, they know the comparisons make sense.

Diana was punished for refusing to play her assigned role; Meghan was punished for the same thing. Harry was punished for protecting his wife instead of the institution, which is what we all know Charles ought to have done.

So the trolls lash out.

They sexualise Diana to degrade her. They mock her to diminish her. They lie about her past, about what she did or didn’t do or think. A deceased woman who isn’t around to stand up for herself.

They attack Meghan to punish her for being compared to her. And they attack Lilibet because even a child threatens their narrative.

It’s misogyny, yes. But it’s also fear.

Fear that Diana’s story still matters.  Fear that the public still sees her clearly. Fear that Harry’s family carries her light. And fear that the monarchy cannot contain that light, no matter how many trolls they unleash.

They can tweet all the slurs they want, they can rewrite history in their heads, they can pretend Diana was the problem.

But they know the truth. And the public knows it too.

Diana was the light. And the light didn’t die. It moved to California.
