Another June has rolled around and something gentle and bright is moving through the Sussex community. A kind of collective softening as we approach Princess Lilibet’s birthday.
Lilibet has become a symbol of continuity, healing, and hope. She’s the Littlest Spencer, the granddaughter Diana never got to hold, and the child who carries forward a lineage defined by courage.
Lilibet stands firmly within the Spencer story. Harry has always kept close to his mother’s family, as the world saw clearly when Charles Spencer supported him at the Invictus 10th Anniversary. There were no Spencers present at the christening of Prince George, yet they were present at Prince Archie’s. The Spencers have always been Harry’s emotional home, the place where Diana’s memory is held with tenderness rather than performance. And now, that home extends to his children.
Lilibet belongs to that lineage because of the values she’s growing up with: warmth, empathy, global awareness, and the freedom to be fully herself. She’s being raised in a world where love isn’t rationed, where emotional honesty is encouraged, and where family is defined by connection rather than hierarchy. She’s a continuation of Diana’s spirit. Not the Diana flattened into a royal myth, but the Diana who laughed loudly, hugged tightly, and believed that kindness could be a form of power.
Lilibet represents a future Diana wanted but never reached. A future where children are protected, not paraded. Where lineage is something you grow from, not something that confines you. Where a little girl can inherit her grandmother’s spark without inheriting the institution that dimmed it … and tried to dim her mother’s.
Lilibet has become a touchstone for so many people who loved Diana. She’s not a replacement, not a replica, not a symbol crafted for public consumption. She’s simply a child. A joyful, curious, beloved child, whose existence reminds us that legacies can heal as well as hurt, that families can choose new paths. That history can be rewritten through tenderness.
As she turns five, Lilibet stands at the centre of a story that is bigger than royalty. She represents the shift from monarchy to humanity, from “duty” to dignity, from myth to meaning. She reminds us that the most powerful legacies aren’t held in institutions, but in the lives of the people who carry them forward.
So here’s to little Lilibet. To her laughter, her freedom, her bright future, and the generations of love behind her.
A short series of birthday essays will be added here over the coming days, celebrating Lilibet’s fifth year as the Littlest Spencer and exploring the legacy, love, and lineage she carries into the future.
