My 3 Favorite IC Championship Matches from the WWE

Dec 03, 2023

The WWE IC Championship has had its legacy and rather it is today or the olden days, this belt had a legacy of it's own. From the days of Pat Paterson for those who could remember, I couldn't. However, I remember more of the days of Tito Santana and afterwords. For this article I will write about my 3 favorite matches of the Golden Age of Wrestling.

Here are the Three Matches that will be featured in this article

  • Tito Santana vs. Macho Man Randy Savage February 8, 1986 Boston Gardens

  • Macho Man Randy Savage vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat Pontiac Silverdome, Wrestlemania III

  • Triple H vs The Rock, The first time The Rock wins the belt. WWE Monday Night Raw

Tito Santana vs. "Macho Man" Randy Savage

This was my favorite of all time. On a side note, I was fortunate enough to meet Tito Santana at one wrestling event. He took pride in his wrestling and on this day he took pride over his loss as he lost to Savage due to foul play in the match.

The two wrestled on one of the shows and I was watching this over my Grandma's house when I was a kid. This kicked off my year with wrestling as I was watching the drama of Hulk Hogan as he started the year getting ready to wrestling King Kong Bundy in the Steel Cage.

It was a solid match filled with drama and then with typical fashion Miss Elizabeth distracted the ref. Macho Man got a hold of a foreign object. and then hit Tito Santana with the object he went down. I am not sure how he won I don't remember it, but Macho Man was the victor amongst the controversy. He was a star on the rise.

"Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

With this match, I didn't see it until years later. I didn't have cable TV then and didn't see it on Pay Per View. I remember the first time I saw the match was on VHS Tape of Wrestlemania III. This was the first time I saw the match. Now I own the DVD of Wrestlemania III and not selling it.

I remember the match had so much hype. I just had to see it. Now that I owned the VHS tape I could watch it. One time I got to the match and everything lived up to it's hype. With George "The Animal" Steele coming in and helping out his friend Ricky Steamboat during the match after Savage was going to reinjure him with the bell. Ricky Steamboat capitalized and he one.

That match was on point and Wrestlemania III may have had Hulk and Andre, but this one had stolen the show. It was that good of a performance.

Triple H vs The Rock for the IC Title (The First Time The Rock Wins)

This was this last match that I remembered from The Golden Era of Wrestling. It wasn't in the 80's, but was in the 90's. I was an avid WCW fan at the time, but I remember tuning in at this time, because I went back and forth to see what had happened. This was the match I tuned into. The Rock was green as a wrestler, but he was a natural and just needed to find himself. He fought against another person at the time that needed to find themselves. What made this match great was that it was pre-attitude era, but they were starting to show the formation of change that would happen. He might have been Rocky Maiva then I am not sure.

I don't remember much about the match it was a long time ago, but I remember the excitement and that I was into the match. And I remember that the title had changed on the then WWF Monday Night Raw.

Conclusion to Article

These Intercontinental Championship matches were my favorite. I believe that they bridged the gap from a bygone era to the Attitude Era. It was a time that will be remembered. From one era to another. These matches had pioneered the business. This is one of the most coveted titles in the WWE with it's History.

For those who may be interested in the Intercontinental Championship history from the WWE. I am selling one of mine that I own on eBay it is called The WWE History of the Intercontinental Championship.

To Find the match of The Macho Man Randy Savage and Ricky The Dragon Steamboat and other matches on the card that day like Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant. You can go to Amazon and check out Wrestlemania III. I receive commission of each sale on Amazon. This is one of the links I support.

Wrestling is an Art form as they perform and they put their work into. They leave a legacy and their history of pain through the years. We have them to remember when we look at the olden days of pro wrestling.
