Working in Alaska

Dec 13, 2022

This October 22 got sent to Anchorage AK to work for 3 weeks on the Min Zidell ATB as an assistant engineer.

An ATB is tug that is coupled to barges via a secure pinning system that enables the combined unit to operate jointly or to form a tanker-like operating vessel.

This is the Min Zidell in Prince William Sound at sunset.  These images where shoot buy Todd Graven Photography.  You can check him out of Facebook at the link. He has some great photography of Alaska and my favorites Northern Light. https://www.facebook.com/toddgravenphotographyWe were running from Anchorage to Valdez and back to Anchorage, hauling fuel from the refinery in Valdez.  This trip made for some good photo opportunities in Alaska. I got to see the Northern Lights both times we were under way.  Not the most ideal conditions to shoot at night as we were under way on a boat at 9+ knots.  I made the best of it and got some good photos for the conditions. I was shooting with a Nikon D810 body and Rokinon 12mm F2.8 Fisheye full manual lens that gave me some acceptable photos of the Northern Lights.  I did try my Sigma 24-70 art lens but was not satisfied with the results. We were in the Gulf of Alaska with six-to-ten-foot seas. The best results of the night were shooting at ISO 1600, f/2.8, exposure time 1 sec.

The second night we were coming into Anchorage with nicer more favorable conditions. The moon was very bright, nearly full.  It made for some great photos and the Shelf Ice was starting to cover Cook Inlet which added to the images.  The best results that night was ISO 1600, f/2.8, exposure time 1.3 sec.  I also got some good landscape shots of the coast line with all the snowy mountains.  It made for a cold but good work trip to Alaska with great photo opportunities of landscapes that most people never get a chance to see. Here are some of the photos from the trip; I will be posting more as I go through them all.
