Why privacy is at the heart of MessageDrop

May 19, 2026

Privacy has been one of the most important ideas behind MessageDrop from the very beginning.

I don’t want to build an app that collects as much personal data as possible just because it can. Instead, MessageDrop is designed to store and process only what is actually needed.

That is why many personal contents — such as private notes, saved places, images, documents, and other user-related data — are stored encrypted directly on the user’s own device whenever possible, rather than being kept centrally on a server.

MessageDrop also makes a clear distinction between:

🌍 Public content
Messages that are intentionally shared on the map for others to discover.

🔒 Private content
Personal notes, memories, documents, and location-based information that remain yours.

💬 Private communication
Connections and chats with people you know, built with privacy in mind.

For me, privacy is not an extra feature that gets added later. It is part of the foundation of the project.

Of course, this approach also makes development more challenging. Building useful features while keeping data collection low takes more thought, more care, and often more work. But I believe it is worth it.

MessageDrop should be helpful, creative, and fun to use — without turning people’s lives into a data source.
