Bearded dragon 101 - Lighting

Bearded dragon 101 - Lighting

Apr 06, 2021

Pleased to see you again dragon lovers, today I will write a smaller article, but important none the less, about lighting you need to have for your lizard.

So to begin with the most important thing we need to understand is that bearded dragons are a species that lives in the deserts of central Australia, meaning it likes heat and the sun obviously. And that’s why in order to keep them in a pleasant surrounding you need two things: A regular heating light bulb to keep them warm and a special neon light that simulates the sun’s radiation.

Heat is essential to keeping a bearded dragon because of one very simple reason, their metabolism. Reptiles are cold-blooded beings and the only heat they get is from basking spots which are provided by the mentioned light bulbs so in order for your dragon to digest his food he MUST have heat and a basking spot. A UVB neon light is necessary so they can bathe in the rays and keep their scales and body healthy so they can shed regularly.

Their light should simulate their natural behavior as close as possible so it is best you keep it on for 12h and off for another 12h using a timer. Also, match their day and night as best as you can with your normal days.

That’s it from this topic, see you next time!
