The Pokrovsky Cathedral. It was built by the Cossacks in 1689 and is the oldest building in Kharkiv that has survived to this day. (the building in the photo on the right). In 1726, on the territory of the cathedral, the Sviato-Pokrovsky Monastery and the Kharkiv Collegium were built, which became an important center of education. (the building in the photo on the left)
In 1750-1759 the legendary Ukrainian philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda taught at the Kharkiv Collegium. The photo shows a monument to the philosopher installed on the territory of the monastery.
Since 1920, the cathedral was closed by the communists and gradually began to collapse. The first restoration was only in 1950, which saved this amazing place and allowed it to be preserved to this day. Unfortunately, the large library of the collegium, which was burned, and the relics of the church, which were looted, were lost to posterity forever.
Nowadays, the doors of the Pokrovsky cathedral are still open for parishioners and those wishing to see the oldest building in Kharkiv.
