The Quiet Power of Being Listened to

The Quiet Power of Being Listened to

Sep 28, 2025

Not every life is shaped by grand gestures. Sometimes, it is shaped by a quiet nod. A steady presence. Someone choosing to listen — not because they have to, but because they care.

When I look back at my life, I remember many moments when I spoke with the innocence — even foolishness — of someone still figuring out the world. My ideas were half-formed, my worries exaggerated, my dreams unrealistically bold. Yet, there were a few rare people who never made me feel ridiculous for it.

Sometimes it was a cousin. Sometimes it was a teacher. Different faces, different roles — but the same grace. They would listen to me as if every word I uttered was worthy of space. They didn’t laugh when I was dramatic. They didn’t roll their eyes when I confused logic with emotion. They listened — fully, attentively — as if I was saying something profound. And in that moment, I believed I was.

They didn’t fix my problems. They didn’t shower me with praise. They simply made me feel valid.

And I now realise: that is one of the greatest gifts a human being can give to another — to make them feel that their existence is not an inconvenience.

You may never know how much your small kindness means to someone. A thoughtful word. A patient ear. A gentle “I understand.” A hand resting kindly on someone’s head. A message saying, “I was thinking of you.” A sentence like, “You’re doing well. I’m proud of you.”

These things may seem small to you — but to someone silently struggling, they can be life-saving.

We often believe that only grand actions create change. But I have learned that the most powerful kindness is usually quiet. Not everyone who is kind will be remembered publicly — but they will be remembered deeply.

As we grow older, we tend to forget the harsh comments. We forgive the ones who mocked us or underestimated us. Their voices fade. But the ones who were kind — their memory lingers like softness in our bones. Even years later, we still pray for them without being asked. We still thank them silently when life feels heavy. And sometimes, when we stand strong, it is their belief echoing inside us.

So if you ever find yourself in a moment where you can make someone’s day lighter — do it. Even if it feels small. Especially if it feels small.

Send that message. Listen without judgment. Give someone the benefit of the doubt. Offer patience instead of irritation. Choose compassion over cleverness.

Because you never know — your small act of goodness might be the one thing that keeps someone going.

Kindness does not need witnesses. It just needs willingness.

And if I am still standing today, it is because someone — once upon a time — chose to be kind when they could have chosen otherwise.

May we all be that someone for somebody.
