Where can we find you right now and what are you up to?
We’ve got an album coming out on April 5th called Teigr, which is exciting and we’re playing some gigs around then to support the release. We’re playing the Wales Goes Pop festival in Cardiff on March 29th. There’ll be a double A-side single release before the album comes out!
Tell us a bit about your influences.
My influences as a songwriter include Prefab Sprout (their first single and first album, basically and early demos), The Velvet Underground, 60s girl groups like the Shangri-Las and the Shirelles, and Television (along with Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd’s solo albums).
I really love Cate Le Bon’s gift for melody, and her single-mindedness. To me Paddy McAloon’s musical vision is always inspiring, with his startling lyrics, jazz-influenced harmony and unconventional approach to songwriting – and to think he did it all with no real musical education. Also Ezra Koenig, Molly Rankin, John Cale…
How did you start making music?
I started writing and recording songs when I was about thirteen on GarageBand. We started the band properly when I was about sixteen: me and some friends and my sister. We played a few gigs and released the single Y Tywysog a’r Teigr (The Prince and the Tiger) back in 2020. The next single O’n i’n Meddwl Bod Ti’n Mynd i Fod Yn Wahanol (I Thought You Were Going to be Different) was played a lot on BBC 6 Music and was Single of the Week on Radio Cymru, which took things to another level.
What obstacles does an emerging artist have to face in our time?
I guess there are so many more people making and releasing music nowadays, which is obviously a good thing in some respects. But I think because of that, it can be harder to make an impact and get noticed. I think artists have to just be themselves and be unique, and if they’re good enough then hope that people will notice them for what they are.
What worked for you marketing-wise? What advice or tips would you give to new artists?
Do what you want to do and don’t let other people change the way you want to make music. Don’t be compromised.
What kind of goals are there for you right now? What should we expect from you in the future? Tell us about your latest or upcoming release.
We’re releasing our debut album in April, and we’re hoping to get some good airplay with the upcoming single off the album. We’ll be playing in different venues across Wales, and in Bristol to support the release.
