You might be wondering where I’m headed with this topic. We’ve just been discussing the need for a new way of thinking, and now we’re diving into financial goals. Rest assured, we’re right on track. This shift in perspective is crucial for understanding our aspirations.

When I ask people about their financial goals, I often hear responses like:
“I want security—having a stable job to provide for my family.”
“I want to be comfortable, knowing my bills are paid, and I can help my kids with college and maybe retire someday.”
These are common aspirations, shaped by societal norms about what success looks like. They reflect what we’ve been taught and what we believe is possible based on our past experiences.
Let’s take a moment to clarify what a financial goal truly is.
Goals vs. Wishes:
It’s essential to understand that a goal is different from a wish. Remember our earlier discussions about goal-setting? Goals require actionable steps. The same principle applies to your financial goals—they demand effort and commitment to reach your desired outcomes.
You may wish to be wealthy, but wishing alone won’t lead to results. You might have saved some money, but like many, you may have invested it primarily for security, not for wealth-building.
Three Types of Financial Goals:
To effectively pursue financial success, you must recognize the distinctions between these three types of financial goals:
1- Job Security: This refers to the likelihood of maintaining your job. High job security means you have a minimal risk of unemployment.
2- Financial Security: This goes beyond just job stability. It means you’re not living paycheck to paycheck; you can cover your bills and still save for emergencies and retirement.
3- Financial Freedom: Many equate financial freedom with being rich, but I disagree. You can be wealthy and still feel financially constrained. To me, financial freedom means living without constant worry about money. It implies that your income is somewhat automatic—if the economy falters, or if you lose your job, your life remains stable.
In essence, aim for financial freedom!
