The feature documentary portrays the everyday life of an off-grid community in the mountains of Monchique, Portugal, which stumbled upon an unusual business idea by chance: Pizza Night—a weekly party that has grown into one of the largest events in southern Portugal and now represents the community’s main source of income.
At the heart of the film are Rudi, a German expat and founder of the small village of Tojeiro, his former partner Katharina, their son Francesco, and Rudi’s current partner Bea. The film follows them in their daily lives beyond the infamous parties, offering an intimate portrait of their coexistence with up to 80 other international volunteers who now call Tojeiro home.
But how sustainable is this lifestyle? Is the event truly a morally and ecologically justifiable source of income—and how do the community members themselves defend their choices?
When the global pandemic strikes, the community is forced to close its gates to outsiders, pushing the organizers into growing financial distress. To survive, they must raise nearly 70,000 euros through donations, reserves, and loans. The film raises a fundamental question: How can the community secure its long-term independence?
