Being an opera singer is hard work. And the worst part of all? Memorising. Memorising words, memorising music, memorising staging. So when Becca Madden, director of the Improvesarios, suggested to some of her colleagues that perhaps there was a way to remove this particular aspect from the job, their interest was piqued…
Improvising though, was a scary thought. Far from the world of high level perfectionism that they were all used to, improvising meant letting go and not worrying so much about what happened. After a few, slightly awkward first rehearsals, and several, rather self conscious improvisation games, the group started to get into their groove, and soon found themselves creating scenes about everything from TV set disasters to a controversial debate about pineapple on pizza.
Scenes quickly became full operas and before they knew it, they were staging productions on rollercoasters, in train stations, in prisons and more. It turns out that you really can make an opera out of anything...
