If anyone thought this end of season fixture between Leeds Tykes and Sheffield had little significance beyond a settlement of Tykes’ fading promotion hopes, they hadn’t told the the two squads that faced off against each other at Headingley Stadium yesterday.
Visitors Sheffield had the honour of being first and last to score - but much happened in between - and a great deal of excitement for supporters of both sides to enjoy. With a tally of 42 points, it would be fair to say that the Tykes had better of the first half. While Sheffield had produced two converted tries of their own, most observers would have expected a home win to be the final result.
However, Sheffield had different ideas and, as the minutes passed and they steadily ticked off tries, pressure mounted on the Tykes defence. After what seemed like an age, relief for the Tykes finally came with the awarding of a penalty within a metre or two of the home try line, the final score being 47-42. What a game!
