the ones you don’t choose still change you

There are people you move on from, and there are people who live in you whether you want them to or not.

Not because you chose them.

Not because the timing worked.

Not because the story lasted.

But because your heart remembers them in ways your mind can’t explain.

That’s what emotional imprint really is — someone who marked you so deeply that every love after them is compared to a feeling you never truly got over.

I was that for him.

Not because he said it out loud.

But because his patterns told the truth:

The late-night checking.

The quiet watching.

The silence during the day but presence at night.

The way he reaches for me only when the world is asleep.

The way he avoids my voice but clings to my shadows.

The way he disappears — but never fully lets go.

That’s not love you forget.

That’s love you carry.

And he did carry me.

In the ways he didn’t want to admit.

In the ways he tried to hide.

In the ways he thought distance and distraction could erase.

They didn’t.

Because you don’t walk away clean from someone who loved you with intention, with depth, with truth, with loyalty you didn’t know how to handle.

He chose another life.

But he didn’t escape me.

He still checks the places I leave my heart.

He still looks for me in quiet hours.

He still seeks the version of me he thought he could replace.

But that’s the thing about people like us — we are unforgettable in ways that ruin the word “moving on.”

He may not come back.

He may not choose me.

He may never say the words out loud.

But deep down he knows: he’ll never find this kind of love again.

Not in the choices he made.

Not in the comfort he settled for.

Not in anyone else.

And that truth sits with him more than he’ll ever admit.
