There are people who have not spoken to you in years who can still change your mood in seconds. When their name or a memory of them comes up, you remember what they said. What they did. What they didn't do. And before you know it, your body is right back there.
Your chest tightens. Your jaw sets. You begin having the conversation you never got to have or rehearsing the one you've already had a hundred times. Meanwhile, they may be somewhere living their life completely unaware that a version of them is still occupying space inside of yours.
And I think that's one of the harder truths about unforgiveness:
Sometimes the person who hurt us stops participating in the story long before we do.
Unresolved pain has a way of keeping relationships alive internally long after they have ended externally.
So today, I want us to look at who's living rent-free just to see it clearly enough that we can decide whether we still want to.
THE HOUSE WITHIN YOU
Take a moment and imagine your inner world as a home.
Your mind.
Your body.
Your emotional world.
Your energy.
This is your house.
Now ask yourself: Who still has access to rooms they should have lost access to a long time ago?
Maybe it's a parent. An ex. A former friend. Someone who betrayed you. Someone who abandoned you. Someone who harmed you and never apologized. Someone who misunderstood you and told a version of the story that made you the villain. Someone who received your love, your labor, your body, your loyalty, your softness and mishandled it.
But there may be someone else in the house too.
You.
More specifically, the version of you that you still haven't forgiven. The version who stayed too long. The version who ignored what she knew. The version who went back. The version who didn't speak. The version who begged. The version who allowed access you now know should never have been given. The version who didn't know then what you know now.
Sometimes we think we're angry with them and beneath that anger is grief toward ourselves.
Why did I let that happen?
Why didn't I leave?
Why didn't I see it?
Why didn't I protect myself?
That version of you may need release just as much as anyone else.
TAKE THE INVENTORY
Grab your journal. You don't have to make this beautiful. It doesn't need to be spiritual or profound. Just tell the truth.
Complete this sentence: The people, experiences, and versions of myself I am still carrying are...
Write until the names stop coming. Then go back through your list and sit with each one.
Ask:
How long have I been carrying this?
What happens in my body when I think about it?
What conversation do I keep replaying?
What am I still waiting for this person to acknowledge?
What has carrying this cost me?
What am I afraid would happen if I finally released it?
Is some part of me using this wound as protection?
Have I confused releasing the pain with saying what happened was okay?
Is there a version of myself in this story that I need to forgive too?
Sometimes unforgiveness gives us evidence that says, See? This really happened.
It gives us protection.
If I never forget what they did, I'll never let someone do it to me again.
Sometimes it gives us an imaginary sense of justice.
If I stay angry, they don't get away with it.
But your suffering is not their sentence. You do not have to continue hurting in order to prove that someone hurt you.
FORGIVENESS DOES NOT MEAN ACCESS
I want to make this very clear. Forgiveness does not mean reconciliation and compassion does not require proximity. Understanding someone's wounds does not mean volunteering to be wounded by them again.
You can forgive someone and still never speak to them again. You can release resentment and maintain the boundary. You can stop carrying the wound without rewriting the truth of what happened. You can love someone and remove their access.
Forgiveness is not always about restoring the relationship. Sometimes forgiveness is how you restore yourself.
And you don't have to force it. There are wounds that require grieving before forgiveness is even an honest conversation.
So if you're not ready to say, I forgive you, don't.
Start somewhere more truthful: I am ready to stop giving this experience more of my life than it has already taken.
That's enough.
TINY RITUAL: REVOKING ACCESS
Take a piece of paper.
Write the name of the person, experience, or former version of yourself you are ready to release.
Then write:
I acknowledge what happened.
I acknowledge what it cost me.
I acknowledge what I needed then that I did not receive.
I will no longer require your apology, understanding, punishment, or transformation in order for me to move forward.
What belongs to you, I return to you.
What belongs to me, I call back to myself.
I release the role you have continued to occupy in my inner world.
You no longer have access to me through this wound.
I choose to use my energy for the life I am creating now.
Sit with it and notice what your body does.
You may cry, feel angry, or you may feel absolutely nothing.
When you're ready, fold the paper away from your body as a symbolic gesture of release.
You can place it somewhere away from your everyday space, tear it up, or if it is safe and appropriate, burn it.
As you do, say:
I release what I no longer consent to carry.
I call my energy home.
Then wash your hands. Breathe. Move your body. Step outside. Do something that reminds your nervous system.
We are here now.
COSMIC CURRENTS
Today's Scorpio Moon supports exactly this kind of work.
Scorpio doesn't care about the polite answer. It asks what's underneath the anger, resentment, grief, or claim that we're "over it."
So don't force yourself toward forgiveness today.
Go toward truth.
What still hurts?
What are you still waiting to hear?
Whose acknowledgment have you unknowingly made a requirement for your freedom?
And what becomes available when you stop waiting?
TODAY'S GRATITUDE
Today, be grateful for awareness.
Because there was once a time when you could be triggered without understanding why.
A time when you repeated patterns without seeing them.
A time when you carried things because you didn't yet know you were allowed to put them down.
Now you can see.
And once you can see what you're carrying, you can begin deciding what is actually yours to keep.
Your inner world is sacred space.
Not everyone deserves permanent residence there.
Come home to yourself.
πΒ Pass it on
If you know someone who is still furnishing a room for someone who left long ago? Send this their way, gently.
Would love to hear from you
