What is Sento?♨️🛁

About Sento:

Sento is a traditional public bathhouse in Japan where people share a bath and relax together. It originated during the Edo period (17th century) when most homes didn’t have their own baths, and it was a place people frequented for their daily bathing. While most Japanese homes today have private baths, sento continues to be loved as a place for relaxation and community interaction.

Difference Between Sento and Onsen:

Sento and onsen are often confused but are actually different. Onsen uses natural hot spring water, while sento typically uses regular tap water without the mineral properties of hot springs. Onsen is often associated with natural healing and relaxation, while sento serves as a convenient daily bathing facility.

Sento Culture:

Sento is more than just a place to bathe. It serves as a social hub where locals gather, chat, and build community ties. Many sento also feature beautiful murals, often of iconic Japanese landscapes like Mount Fuji, adding to the unique atmosphere. After bathing, it’s common to enjoy a bottle of milk or ice cream, which is also part of the sento experience.

Sento is a remnant of Japan’s old way of life, offering visitors a valuable chance to experience Japanese culture and daily living.

I've picked out some great sento in Kyoto! I've created a Google list, so feel free to use it as a reference!
