The highest benchmark score does not automatically make a model the right production choice.
A useful model evaluation starts with your own representative tasks and measures the tradeoffs that affect the product:
• Quality: Does the output pass a task-specific rubric?
• Reliability: How often does it fail, refuse, or invent details?
• Latency: Can it meet the user experience target under load?
• Cost: What is the real cost per successful task—not just per token?
• Privacy: Where is data processed, stored, and logged?
• Control: Do you need tool calling, structured output, fine-tuning, or local deployment?
Test a small set of candidates behind a model gateway. Keep prompts, evaluation cases, and output schemas portable. That reduces vendor lock-in and makes future upgrades much safer.
For many systems, a routing strategy works better than one model for everything: a fast model for simple requests, a stronger model for difficult tasks, and a local option for sensitive data.
