Isolda Dragomir is a Master of Dark Botanical Oils & Alchemical Still Lifes, known for her distinctive fusion of Alchemical Cryptobotanical Studyand 19th-century Symbolist Vanitas. Her paintings treat poisonous plants, ancient earth and forgotten organic remains not as scientific specimens, but as mysterious subjects of contemplation, where botanical beauty becomes a language of mortality, transformation and hidden knowledge.
In Alchemical Belladonna Vanitas, a magnificent black belladonna rises from the dark Transylvanian earth. Its deep foliage bears pale violet-black bell-shaped flowers and glossy near-black berries, while its exposed roots descend into the soil and curl naturally around an ancient weathered bone. The plant dominates the composition like a living relic, suspended between beauty and decay.
A narrow shaft of warm, almost candle-like light emerges from the surrounding darkness, revealing the intricate leaves, flowers, berries and roots against profound umber-black shadows. The atmosphere remains solemn and serene, with the alchemical character suggested through composition, light and symbolism rather than explicit fantasy.
The work is painted in richly layered oil impasto and translucent historical glazes, using an extremely restrained antique palette of bone white, faded parchment, ash grey, raw earth umber, deep forest viridian and brown-black. Subtle traces of poisonous nightshade purple, muted sulfur yellow, lichen moss green and aged gold remain like faded pigments surviving from a forgotten 19th-century canvas.
The result is a mysterious and refined botanical vanitas — a lost Transylvanian masterpiece in which poisonous flora, ancient soil, bone and shadow become a single meditation on life, death and the secrets hidden beneath the earth.
