Ukraine - June 24, 2024

Satellite imagery confirmed that Ukraine did indeed damage a drone facility in Russia the other day. Ukraine today claimed that 120 enemy drones were destroyed in the resulting fires.

Speaking of drones, a Russian milblogger today claimed that Russia had shot down an American drone over the Black Sea. Earlier, publicly available flight data had shown it tracking further from Ukraine than usual (the United States fairly routinely flies surveillance drones in the Black Sea). The United States quickly put out a statement denying that one of their drones had been shot down. Flight data revealed that the drone did indeed return back to base. However, it's entirely possible that the United States was flying a second drone, with its transponder off.

This came on the heels of Russia summoning the American ambassador. Russia declared that they hold the United States and Ukraine as equally guilty for the recent strikes on Crimea. This is a significant change in Russia's rhetoric regarding the supply of weaponry to Ukraine. It suggests that Russia is deeply concerned over the targeting of their air defenses and radar installations by Ukraine, even as Russia today may have scored a hit on an IRIS-T launcher.

Ukraine pretty clearly has the momentum on their side at this point when it comes to geopolitical clout from Switzerland. Today, another country signed onto the joint communique, Malawi. Malawi is a notable country due to a tragedy that befell the country earlier this year; a plane crash wiped out much of their senior leadership. Iran, an enemy of Ukraine, experienced the same thing with a helicopter crash this year, and Ukraine experienced the loss of multiple officials in a 2023 helicopter crash outside of Kyiv.

The EU passed a fourteenth round of sanctions on Russia. This round is focused pretty heavily on preventing Russian circumvention of previous sanctions. Notably, it includes a ban on the use of EU facilities for the shipment of Russian liquefied natural gas. The sanctions package passed a few days after Japan slapped Russia and international companies based in multiple other countries with sanctions as well, a sign of growing international agreement to tighten the enforcement of sanctions already in place.
