Ukraine - February 09, 2024

The blockade of Ukraine by Polish farmers has resumed, with them blocking multiple border points. This runs against a prior arrangement between the Polish government and the farmers which was supposed to have lasted for many more weeks. Fortunately for Ukraine, the amount of time that thad passed with no blockade has allowed the backlogs to clear, and trade through the Black Sea has slowly been ramping up while Ukraine has been weakening the Black Sea Fleet. In parallel, additional infrastructure is being built between Ukraine with countries such as Moldova and Romania. Overall, this means that this blockade has the potential to be less damaging to Ukraine than earlier ones, though obviously the situation still is not ideal for Ukraine.

Ukraine has rejected the reporting from the New York Times, reasserting that they do not believe any Ukrainian POWs were aboard the doomed Il-76. This is a rare public disagreement between Ukrainian and American intelligence, even if the American intelligence was only indirectly stated through the New York Times.

At the request of Syrskyi, the new Commander in Chief, Zelenskyy has appointed a new Chief of General Staff for Ukraine's Armed Forces. Major General Anatoliy Barhilevych will be taking the role. Such changes are not uncommon when major figures are replaced; a similar process took place when Defense Minister Umerov replaced Reznikov.

The United States Senate has passed a bill which would see Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan receive aid. It now passes to the House, which has been far more reluctant to embrace foreign aid so far. It's not yet clear whether or not the bill can pass the House, but one being able to pass the Senate shows that there has at least been some forward momentum.
