Middle East - February 17, 2024

Reported a while ago, the United States today, officially redesignated the Houthis as a terrorist organization. Missile launches from the Houthis have continued, and the United States has retaliated with with strikes against Houthi drones and missiles. These occurrences are happening fairly frequently, but it is worth noting that today's missile attacks by the Houthis once again took place in the Red Sea, and not east of Aden. So far, there has only been one confirmed attack by the Houthis since the Iranian spy vessel Behshad went to port, possibly in response to a cyber attack by the United States.

Israel detained a large number of people around Nasser hospital, in western Khan Younis. The hospital and its surroundings are seemingly under Israeli control at this point, meaning that the remainder of Khan Younis out of Israeli control is rather small. The Rafah operation still has not yet started; negotiations are probably ongoing. But with the Khan Younis operation still ongoing the IDF are somewhat busy. I suspect that if the Rafah operation does happen, we won't see it until after Israel has fully secured Khan Younis.
