Jimmie King is finally ready, of so I thought…
Milton and I got on the road about 10:30 from Studio 8. Said goodbye to all our friends and hopped in. Stopped off in Fredericksburg for lunch at the hilltop cafe. Milton is one of my more refined friends, so we passed up the Dairy Queen. If you haven’t been to the Hill Top cafe, put it on your list. Milton introduced me in the early 2000s and I’ve been going every chance I get.
The trip was nice and Jimmie King was comfortable, but I noticed a wobble in the suspension and thought it was the new coil springs AEV recommended, turns out that was not it at all. The Yukon axles I put in years ago were faulty. The wobble was from the lug nuts slowly falling off at 80 mph along I-10. 😳 Scary stuff and thank God the last one fell of taking a corner at 5 mph. The damage was the new rim and tire were destroyed. The downside of custom quality kit is replacement cost, I’m out $700 plus the cost of the fix. So, what was going to be a quick trip to the liquor store for bourbon, turned into an adventure.
We spent three hours on the cross section of highway 90 and highway 67 blocking traffic. Within minutes, Matty (a local of 3 weeks) pulls up and gives us a bottle jack to help with the crappy high-lift I have for situations like this. A few minutes later, the Sheriff shows up to help and then an officer of the local 5-0 took control of traffic. Oy, how embarrassing 🙈. Two other locals stopped to offer help as well. For an awful experience, it was a comforting experience. I then remembered I had AAA and called them. 30 minutes later, Tyler (collage kid at Sul Ross, studying to be a game warden) shows up with a flatbed to take Jimmie to the closest repair shop in Alpine.
We now are confined to Marfa with no transportation and only two nights at a very cool AirBnB.
We are Marfa famous.
Tyler gave us a ride to the AirBnB and headed off to Alpine after Milton tipped him handsomely. It’s a Milton thing… We had a few beers and went to bed.
More tomorrow!
