Taxes are Beautiful was build for tax planning, I needed to have some conception of how income taxes are calculated. I also wondered why inputting some numbers into the tax prep software changed my income tax, while inputting others didn't change it at all. Clearly there is a non-linear relationship!
Conventional tax planning software purposely obscures the nitty-gritty of how taxes are calculated in the name of simplicity. For good reason! The US tax code is fiendishly complex and full of loopholes and carve-outs. But if you want to "debug" your return, you quickly run into The Law of Leaky Abstractions.
I also felt the step-by-step UI of tax planning software to be plodding at times. Just let me enter in all the forms I have at at the same time, dammit!
