At GMFF, we’re always inspired by programs that bring together amateur radio, history, and exploration. One of the most fascinating is the UK Bunkers on the Air (UKBOTA) award program.
What is UKBOTA?
UKBOTA encourages radio amateurs and SWLs to activate or contact Royal Observer Corps and other historic bunkers across the UK. These sites, often hidden in plain sight, carry rich stories of the past and now provide a unique stage for radio activity.
Why it matters:
It highlights forgotten heritage through amateur radio.
It offers both activators and hunters the chance to earn attractive awards.
It’s friendly and accessible — not a contest, but a way to explore, learn, and connect.
SWLs are welcome to submit reception logs, making it inclusive for all.
Just like our GMFF activities, UKBOTA captures the spirit of combining outdoor adventure with radio, adding a historical twist that makes every contact meaningful.
