Finished Project: Discworld City Watch Ornament

Jan 07, 2024

Hello all!

I've been working on things in the background since my last post, and while I don't have much updates, I do have a minor one: my annual discworld ornament that I gift to my brothers each year. This is the third year in a row that I've made a gift, and I'm pretty proud of this one.

I started the ornament out by sculpting a plasticine clay model. This was my first time using plasticine and it was FANTASTIC. It was so smooth and soft and did exactly what I wanted and stuck to each other perfectly. It doesn't dry out so it worked beautifully.

After making it, I worried that it would interfere with the silicone that I was using to make a mold. so I did a mini test piece, and it worked pretty good, but I made sure to coat the clay with baby powder first. I think I would have had more issues if I didn't do that.

After making a silicone mold, I then mixed clear resin and a fine bronze powder together in a process called cold-casting. I made sure to brush the interior parts of the mold with bronze powder as well. Once hardened, I could then buff the ever living heck out of it with steel wool and it shined up nicely.

For the lilac, I painstakingly cut out pieces of purple felt, hot glued them to the ends of some floral wire, then wired them together in bunches along with a few leaves. That was the tiring part. But I think it was well worth while!
