Flushing Nasty Black Fluid Out Of My Power Steering Pump (1977 Ford F250)

Jul 12, 2026

When I say this stuff stinks, it stinks! Thankfully because I regularly check my engine bays fluids I found that my power steering fluid really had a nasty smell to it a while back. I still can't remember if I did a legit flush all those years ago but I did one now. I would say all in all about 80-90% of the old fluid got drained out. I did notice the new clear stuff was a shade darker vs being clear. Without a whole system cleaning this is to be expected honestly.

I now know one reason the old 1977 Ford was feeling funny in the steering. Old fluid that's the color of diesel oil will do that! To do this job on the 351m engine was a total of 5-6 fasters to get the pump and cooler out. Not a bad job at all, would have probably taken me honestly 45min without the camera. May The Lord Jesus Bless Yall!!!
