When a large crowd gathered, with people from one town after another journeying to Jesus, he spoke in a parable. “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path and was trampled, and the birds of the sky ate it up. Some seed fell on rocky ground, and when it grew, it withered for lack of moisture. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some seed fell on good soil, and when it grew, it produced fruit a hundredfold.”
Luke 8:4-8
Jesus describes the same seed falling on four different types of ground. The seed does not change. What changes is the place where it lands and what happens to it afterward.
We can hear God’s Word many times and still respond to it differently. Sometimes it barely enters our hearts before our attention moves elsewhere. At other times, we receive it with enthusiasm, but when following Christ becomes difficult, that enthusiasm fades. There are also times when faith is slowly crowded out by worries, ambitions, responsibilities, money, or the many things competing for our attention.
Then there is the good soil. The seed is received, allowed to grow, and eventually produces fruit.
This parable invites us to look at the condition of our own hearts. Hearing the Gospel is only the beginning. We need to hold on to what Jesus teaches and allow it to shape how we live, especially when doing so requires patience, sacrifice, or a change in ourselves.
Good soil does not appear by accident. We prepare it whenever we return to God, remove what is getting in the way, and choose to live according to His Word. The fruit may take time to appear, but a life rooted in Christ will not remain unchanged.
What is preventing God’s Word from taking deeper root in our lives today? Is there a worry, distraction, habit, or attachment that we need to clear away?
Lord Jesus, help us to receive Your Word with open hearts. Remove what prevents it from growing within us, and give us the strength to remain faithful when life becomes difficult. May Your Word take root in us and bear fruit in the way we live and love. Amen.
