"The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be."
Matthew 6:22-23
Jesus reminds us that the way we see, not just with our eyes, but with our hearts, shapes our entire being.
If our “eye is sound,” meaning our inner vision is rooted in truth, love, and goodness, then light fills us. But if our view of the world is clouded by jealousy, anger, or selfishness, we let in darkness instead.
It’s not about physical sight, but spiritual focus.
What are we letting into our hearts through our gaze, our thoughts, our desires?
What we choose to dwell on can either lift us closer to God or pull us further away. A “sound eye” seeks goodness, believes the best in others, and chooses light even in the face of darkness.
Sometimes we don’t even realize that our “light” has dimmed, that we’ve begun to focus more on what’s wrong, what we lack, or what we fear.
Jesus gently warns us that this kind of inward darkness can grow deep and overwhelming.
But there’s always a way back to light: turn your eyes again to Him.
Let Jesus reset your vision today. Ask Him to help you see others with love, to look for grace in small things, and to notice His presence in your daily life.
What have your eyes been focused on lately—hope or fear, love or resentment, light or darkness?
Lord, help me to see clearly.
When my thoughts grow dark, redirect my gaze to You.
Make my heart open, my vision sound,
and fill me with Your light.
Amen.
