There’s a habit I’ve seen with writers I respect that I want to pick up. The detachment from the last write to the next—because if your writing is good—it would go into the world and appear on pages you never wrote.
Truly, it is the ability to write on command. To ‘display’ at the first sight of fanfare. To ‘perform,’ to the crowd’s bellows, and the dark’s quiet.
It is also the skill to willingly dive hopelessly into any writing project—because who are you to tell them what to write or not?
Right?
It is that heft to question the editor’s corrections—“How dare they?”
Likewise, it is the genius of leaving their magic in every pen—on every word or, in some cases, on every letter of their keyboard. The world and its crows honing in on the target, circling over the skill of their writing.
It is the skill or art of having a writer’s signature!
