In a welcome development for travellers and pilgrims, a direct train service from Kerala to Rameswaram has finally become a reality. What was once a day-and-a-half journey to reach Rameswaram or Dhanushkodi can now be completed comfortably overnight.
The service is operated by the Amrita Express (Train Nos. 16343 / 16344), which previously ran only between Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai. The route has now been extended to Rameswaram, fulfilling a long-standing demand from devotees and travel enthusiasts seeking a convenient connection from Kerala to the sacred destination.
The Amrita Express (16343) departs from Thiruvananthapuram Central at 8:30 PM, travelling via Kollam, Chengannur, Kottayam, Ernakulam Town, Thrissur, Palakkad, Pollachi, Palani, and Madurai, before reaching Rameswaram at 12:45 PM the following day. The total journey time is approximately 16 hours, offering travellers a comfortable overnight trip.
The return service, Train No. 16344, leaves Rameswaram at 1:30 PM and arrives back at Thiruvananthapuram Central at 4:55 AM, following the same route in reverse.

The train offers a full range of coach options — from First AC to Sleeper Class. The sleeper fare is ₹415 from Thiruvananthapuram and ₹330 from Ernakulam. For AC three-tier, the fares are ₹1125 and ₹900 respectively, while AC two-tier tickets cost ₹1605 and ₹1275. First Class AC fares are ₹2675 and ₹2115, and a general ticket is priced at approximately ₹200.
Travelling over the iconic Pamban Bridge is among the highlights of the journey, offering a stunning view of the sea. With Dhanushkodi located just 20 kilometres from Rameswaram, this new route opens up easier access to both the spiritual and scenic attractions of Tamil Nadu’s southern coast
