My Thoughts on Rectified Nylon Strings

My Thoughts on Rectified Nylon Strings

Nov 01, 2023

I recently tried a set of Savarez 520J High Tension Nylon Strings on my 1986 Yamaha FC-6 Flamenco guitar (the one you see pictured on the album art for my EP Short Stories & Folktales) and while I did enjoy the initial volume, attack, and overall sound of the strings, I did notice a rather audible squeak on the treble strings. For recording purposes this may become a problem as one would want to minimise any unwanted string noise. I did record a song with these strings it was my latest track Memorial which is on my EP Short Stories & Folktales.

Another noticeable thing about the trebles is the texture which some may like, while others like myself prefer the smooth texture of clear nylons which are much more comfortable for slides. The texture will take some time to get used to, especially when you first put the new strings on the guitar.

I do like the basses of the Savarez 520J I must say, although the D string broke after for some weeks. Luckily for me I don't cut my strings, and therefore I was able to reuse the same string since I had enough length to do so.

In conclusion while the sound of the rectified nylon strings is pleasing as they have a warm tone, the texture and squeaking is rather off putting especially for recordings, since I already have to be careful when shifting positions on the bass strings, I don't want to have to worry about squeaking treble strings too.
