The Importance of Hobbies

The Importance of Hobbies

Mar 30, 2025

I’m a fitness guy. My entire career is in fitness. Am I a gym rat? Truth be told, if I did not work at a gym, I can’t say I would be. Why is that?

Because exercise is my career and a health choice, not necessarily a hobby. I enjoy it, but it’s not all of me.

Nearly a decade ago, I was working a job as a teacher at a charter school that was requiring 70 hours per work minimum. Needless to say, I couldn’t cram BODYPUMP classes into my schedule.

In short, exercise being my only at the time led to an inevitable decline in my mental health. That in itself is a long story for another time.

So what do I do to keep myself entertained outside of fitness? Here are a few things.

Video Games

If anyone reading this is someone that thinks video games are “lazy” or “immature,” this isn’t the page for you. Escapism during this turbulent, volatile, ever-changing world is soothing. Here are my favorites:

  • Tears of the Kingdom: I have a mild obsession with Zelda, evident by four rather large tattoos devoted to it. I have 700 hours invested in this game and I’m looking forward to many more.

  • Subnautica: The game I never knew I needed in my life. Spending time in the abyss of an unknown ocean with leviathan-sized fish that want to kill you? Sign me up. It’s relaxing. …using this as inspiration for my next tattoo….

  • No Man’s Sky: Getting lost in the infinite wonders of simulated space. Need I say more?

So what else do I do?

Creativity Time

  • Writing: Sometimes it’s nice to let those stories I keep in my head out onto paper. I spend my time in a sci-fi, fantasy world I’ve built in my head over many, many years of my life

  • Trying new things: Currently, paint by number. It’s extremely relaxing!

Hobbies are important. They keep me from spiraling into the doom and gloom of the world, and they allow me an outlet so I can constructively engage and act on what is happening.
