Notes From The Long Table – Note No. 001: “OSE, Can You See?”
In this debut episode we set the stage for the podcast and dive into four short stories that frame our love of old-school tabletop gaming:
1. The Birth of Role-Playing – How Gary Gygax turned a miniature-wargame hobby into the first RPG.
2. The D&D Basic Set – Why the original Basic edition was deliberately lightweight and improvisational, and how it contrasted with the more rigid AD&D rules.
3. A Decade Away from the Table – My personal hiatus from face-to-face gaming, the shift to online play, and why returning to a physical table matters.
4. Introducing Old School Essentials (OSE) – A quick rundown of the system we’ll be running, plus a glimpse of the first session (a “funnel” adventure called Tangled) and the community that sparked it.
We also explain the podcast’s format: sticky notes, journal notes, table notes, scrap notes, and final notes so you know what to expect in each episode.
Why listen?
If you’re curious about the history of D&D, want a candid look at modern tabletop revival, or simply enjoy a relaxed, fireside-chat style discussion of games, this episode gives you the roadmap and the first taste of what’s to come.
Grab a cup of tea, settle in, and join me at the long table.
