We Rehydrated some of our Freeze Dried Chicken Broccoli Alfredo on a recent camping trip to one of our state parks - here's what we learned:
This meal was FD in Feb 2024 and placed into our longer-term storage. We have a HR Small Pro FD and we portion out two servings per tray. This way we can funnel each tray into a mylar bag, and we know that it's two servings for us to share later.
Part of our spot-checking routine is to occasionally grab FD meals out of our storage bins and see how they turn out. This way we can have greater confidence in the other bags that are still in storage.
While packing for our trip, I gently squeezed this bag and checked the seals. Contents were dry, crunchy, and the bag was ever so slightly sucked in which also indicated there were no leaks.
Once at the park, we prepared for dinner. I always open the bags slowly and carefully, and visually examine the contents before giving things a sniff - all was well. The OA was still somewhat flexible indicating it had done its job and still had a touch of life left in it.
I divided the bag of food into our two containers and added water - hot but not boiling - then let them sit with the lids on for about 10 minutes.
The flavor was good, and it's a meal we will definitely want to make more of! It stored well, tasted good, and is one of our favorite combos of meat and veggies.
To make this skillet meal, we cooked up some diced chicken, broccoli, sliced mushrooms, diced onions & garlic, and then added some alfredo sauce until it was the consistency and flavor we liked.
We spread portions across two trays, pre-froze, and freeze dried.
If I were to change anything for next time I would cut the pieces of chicken and broccoli even smaller. We were going for bite-sized but if they were smaller pieces they would have rehydrated faster and would have been easier to gently stir in the hot water. As always our insulated containers kept things piping hot while waiting for the meal to rehydrate. Here are some photos of our meal once rehydrated.
