Tuscany- Unroofed Abbey & mythical sword in the Stone

Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Tuscany, Italy, lies the enchanting sight of the San Galgano Abbey, a Gothic masterpiece standing as a testament to medieval architecture and the enduring power of faith. Today, the abbey's roofless grandeur evokes a sense of tranquility and wonder, a stark contrast to its bustling past as a thriving Cistercian monastery.

This  Cistercian abbey is located  near Chiusdino village in the Sienese countryside, and is among Italy's most distinctive abbeys, remaining roofless for two centuries since a lightning strike in 1786. The monks chose not to rebuild after the collapse, transforming the deconsecrated church into a stable.

The hermitage, integral to the site, is the Rotonda di Montesiepi, where San Galgano retreated after a dissolute youth. A large rock in the Rotonda holds a sword hilt, with the story suggesting that in 1180, Galgano converted to Christianity, thrusting his blade into the rock as a vow, transforming it into a cross.
