Nestled 455 meters above sea level in the heart of the Chieti province, Roccascalegna is a charming village with a rich history waiting to be explored.
While nowadays the village welcomes visitors with very romantic signs, perfect for pictures, it actually bears a not-so-romantic past.
As you approach Roccascalegna along the scenic "Fondo Valle Sangro" road, your eyes will be drawn to the village's crowning jewel—the ancient castle. Rising majestically over lush Mediterranean vegetation, it's easy to see why this place enchants photographers.
The name "Roccascalegna" itself derives from the castle's unique feature—a wooden staircase that winds its way from the village to the castle tower. This staircase, a testament to the village's heritage, is even depicted on the municipal coat of arms.
Throughout its history, the castle experienced periods of neglect, but in 1985, the Croce Nanni family donated it to the municipality. Extensive renovations were completed in 1996, and today its visitable (entrance- 3 euros
But… Roccascalegna has a ghostly secret. The castle is said to be haunted by Baron Corvo De Corvis, a 16th-century tyrant who reintroduced the medieval practice of "Jus Primae Noctis,"- every new bride had to spend the first wedding night with him, instead of her groom. Now wonder that one brave bride finally put an end to his reign of terror and stabbed De Corvis with a dagger, directly into his heart.
On stormy nights, locals claim to hear a flock of crows, announcing the return of Corvo De Corvis to the castle, forever seeking peace.
But that's the dark past… today Roccascalegna is a magnificent place to discover in Abruzzo. Would you love to?
