A Pilgrimage to the Relics of the Three Wise Men in Milan

Feb 12, 2024

Milan, Italy is a city steeped in history and religious tradition. Among its many treasures, the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio holds a unique and sacred relic – the bones of the Three Wise Men.

In the year 344, Saint Eustorgio, the Bishop of Milan, acquired the relics of the Magi from Constantinople. The story goes that the oxcart transporting the precious cargo mysteriously stopped at the site of the present-day basilica, indicating that this was the intended resting place for the remains.

For centuries, the relics of the Three Wise Men were venerated in Milan, drawing pilgrims from all over Europe. However, in 1160, during the sack of Milan, the relics were seized by the German Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and taken to Cologne.

The loss of the relics was a profound blow to Milan, and for centuries, the city mourned their absence. In 1904, however, a partial return of the relics was made. Fragments of the bones and garments of the Magi were returned to Milan and placed in a beautiful shrine in the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio.

Today, the relics of the Three Wise Men are once again a source of devotion and inspiration for pilgrims from around the world. Every year on the Feast of the Epiphany, a grand procession takes place in Milan, culminating at the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio, where the relics are honored with great reverence, as for one day they are espoused to the believers.

The relics of the Three Wise Men are a powerful reminder of the Christian faith, and they offer a unique opportunity to connect with the history and spirituality of Milan.

In addition to the relics, the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio is also home to a magnificent procession that takes place every year on the Feast of the Epiphany. This grand procession, known as the Processione dei Magi, is a centuries-old tradition that has been held in Milan since 1336.

The Processione dei Magi is a must-see event for anyone visiting Milan during the Christmas season. It is a magical spectacle that will leave you feeling inspired and uplifted.

We, Andrea and Evija, live streamed the religious Mass from inside the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio on the day of Epiphany in January 2024, including the procession of the Three Wise Men.
