R&D departments across the globe are saving money and upcycling with sustainable innovation

1. QUEST by Camira

Welcome back to ESG Nerd. Learning about innovative products is one benefit of being a sustainability professional. I recently learned about CAMIRA's partnership with SEAQUAL INITIATIVE. Camira is a leading fabrics manufacturer and their products cover seats on Transport for London's many underground carriages.

QUEST is Camira's initiative to use plastic taken from our season. The recycled polyester fabric contains SEAQUAL yarn, made from over 220 tonnes of marine garbage. You wouldn't know QUEST was synthetic, it's soft to the touch.

SEAQUAL INITIATIVE works with the waste management and recycling industries to transform marine litter into SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC, so that leading brands and manufacturers can create inspiring sustainable products. - Sequal.org

Puma Clever Little Bag

When did you last buy a pair of trainers? You'll remember them coming in a box and probably a single-use plastic bag, promoting the store. Fuseproject, known for their design and sustainable strategies, came up with a great idea, this time for global fashion giant Puma.

Fuseprojects's Clever Little Bag, does exactly what is says on the tin. Don't take my word for it.

The bag saves 20 million megajoules of electricity, 1 million liters of water, 500,000 liters of diesel fuel (lighter weight), and 8,500 tons of paper per year. At the same time, the solution is reusable for the consumer, and fully recyclable at the end of its life. - Fuseproject

Groasis Growbox

The Groasis Waterboxx is an intelligent bucket made from recycled paper. The Netherlands exported this brilliant invention. It supports the growth of plants in unfavorable conditions by collecting rainwater and trapping water from condensation. The Waterboxx is a vital for food security in arid places.

Groasis wants to make 2 billion hectares of depleted farmland suitable for forestry and agriculture, and by doing so help remedy food and water shortages. Groasis.com

Tetra Pak

There's more to Tetra Pak than a sustainable FSC certified product. The company set out to pioneer aseptic technology. Simply, Tetra is able to package commercially sterile food products so it can last longer and reduce food waste. There's no need for refrigeration or preservatives.

We commit to making food safe and available, everywhere and we promise to protect what's good: food, people and the planet. It drives everything we do and underpins all of our decisions. - Tetra Pak

Leicester's Bee Bus Stops

How can we prevent the decline in bee numbers? Well, one city in England is doing its bit. Leicester City Council has added green rooftops to its bus shelters to attract bees and other wildlife. According to Springwise, a mix of wildflowers and Sedum plants attract bees and other insects. The greentops also prevent water runoff. Could this be the answer to regenerating bee numbers?

Now, how to do we get Clear Channel, the advertising owner to roll out this simple innovation nationwide?

If you'd like to know more about how to help your business become more sustainable, or if you want to share ideas, promote the great work of someone else, please let me know.
