In 1995, I Abox a limited edition disc entitled, Mixology.1. Reference to it is on this here link: https://www.discogs.com/master/1276922-Anything-Box-Mixology-1-1989-1995.
Track #12 is the one in question, among the other rarities that were on this CD. But for the moment, I'm focusing on, In Your Smile, a song that I recorded in one take straight to cassette back in 1990-91 (that version is on Bandcamp and you can find that below). The song was supposed to be on Worth, so a 'proper' demo was quickly sequenced (together with a 2nd verse of the song).

I wound up putting it on Mixology.1 a year later after Hope was released because the song stuck out again. I did not re-touch it or anything for that release. It's pretty, but a demo is a demo, is a demo, right? It's not meant for a final release. But fans liked it. Some would ask for it to be on the live show sets. And we never got around to it.
Now here we are, 2022. After a bit of soul searching and some prodding, I have once again revisited the song. Thus far, I'm doing ok with it. I managed to re-program most of the sounds, which was an exercise in memory and skill on to itself. I know, for example, that my favorite version is the one that's on, Memories of The Fall. But that has only one verse and no transition into some sort of break. The later version is not as groove-laden as the first, but at least it has a second verse. And there is a little break in there that could still work. It's a tough one.
This week, I abandoned all else and worked on the sounds for this song and this song alone. That's about 10 hours per day for an entire week. I've yet to sequence one note. I had to first learn to play the song from scratch. Then, I had to practice my skills with body memory to re-create the sounds. This was easier than I thought with some sounds and quite a challenge with others. I have ZERO patches saved from any sessions with the track.
I started with the bells from the 2nd version, and the mood went sour quickly. I'm not fond of them, as they were some generic patch. The first demo does not have them. What to do? Trudge ahead. Hope something happens? I decided to challenge myself to find a bell sound that wasn't the generic one. It became a programming nightmare from ESQ1 to Triton, to M1, and even Kontakt. Eventually, I had about seven hopefuls for the new part. I'm still unsure if I will use any of them.
The next part seemed like a walk in the park. It wasn't. The strings in the second version do not happen in the first. One is a Juno, and on the other, it's a Korg T3. I decided to work on both parts and it took an entire day to get the sound where I was semi-happy with it/them. Why am I doing this again??? Seriously, tell me. I'm sure if I just sit and play random things a song will come. Why bother with an old one? But something did happen.
New sounds started to surface that might work for a new version. A reprise of the song came to be, and in getting the sounds, something has edged me forward. Today, for example, I worked on the bass, which I thought was going to be the biggest challenge, and I knocked that one out in an hour or so about 99% from the first version (I like the bass on that one better than the second). Because it came so easy, I made the sound on three different synths to pick and choose. Still, not a single note was sequenced. That is almost coming.
There's a riff that's on the second version I really do love. It's at the tail end of the song. I worked on that riff because I forgot how to play it. I practiced it straight for the last three days. It's pretty. I decided to try this on some treated piano samples I have. I was really surprised at how much I'd forgotten. Have to give a point to the second version for that part. It's got something. Maybe, just maybe, I can work this into the first version somehow? Maybe the piano can do the bell parts?
But I'm tired. Tonight I have to stream, and I'm calling it a week with this one. Perhaps next week I will have begun sequencing the song together? Maybe I can finally play it out? Maybe. At least the song is not dead yet.
