imageI knew that if I was patient enough, Arturia would do their Black Friday sale and I'd upgrade my Collection V for a song (99 bucks!). My favorite instrument there is of course, my trusty SQ80V, which is essentially my ESQ1 which I have loved for more than 40 years now. My reason for upgrading was at first the Synth X and a few newer versions of my favorites. But I just got a glimpse into the creative possibilities with Pure LoFi, which I will admit, was not a wow factor in just reading about it ( I tend to not like pre-made sample libraries). But as I played with this instrument today, I got under its guts and found this... You can import your own folders of samples! And that does change things, dramatically.

What I love about bringing in my own folder is that this device is like a digital-to-analog "preparation device". It's got the noise, the fragments, and raw sounds to add to my own creations. It's a way of making new instruments from found sounds and acoustic ones. This little guy also boasts a strange feature I've not seen in an instrument sampler, which is round-robin on samples per note (you trigger random sample with every key down). This is pretty unique, and is something you'd see in a drum sampler, but it works great as a synth with an almost circuit-bent or 'broken' VCO. For example, I could make a sound that randomly produces errors by having 5 different variations of the same sample, or five completely different samples VCOs of the same Sawtooth. I love the processing engine too. I guess it spoke to me?

Instantly, I found myself gravitating to places I'd normally not go, and that made me very happy, enough to want to jot this all down in a post for no one but myself? Hehehe. I guess it is a reminder to play more often on Mondays especially.

OK. Back to work on "Time To Go"...
