That's it that's the post. Your art does not have to be good. It can be quick and messy and out of proportion. The lines can be shaky, the composition can suck, the colors can look weird together. And you know what? It's still art, you made something, you sat down and made something with your own hands and your own brain and that's incredible.
Does it feel good when you work really hard on something to get it just right and it finally comes out the way you had imagined? Of course it does. But that doesn't have to be the case with everything you make.
I was watching a Skillshare class, Always Drawing: 7 Creative Exercises to Jumpstart Your Sketchbook by: Mike Lowery (not sponsored just saying it in case anyone wanted to watch it themselves) and it's seven prompts aimed at getting people to relax and just get into the habit of drawing and experimenting in their sketchbooks. I got out a bunch of pens and markers and things that I almost never use and just doodled along with the video.
One prompt was to draw a treehouse and you know what? My treehouse drawing is bad, I like the actual house of it fine enough. It's not perfect, but I think it's kinda cute. The trees on the other hand are wonky and crooked and don't look like very good trees. I'm not very good at drawing trees in general and I didn't even sketch anything out first. You know what else? I had fun. I got out my sketchbook and some supplies I'm not used to using and I made something out of it. I gave myself the space to make something no matter how it turned out and I enjoyed every second of it.
No plan, no pressure, no revising over and over to make it perfect. Just a few pens and a piece of paper.
All art ever needs to be is made.
So next time you're stressing out about a piece of art not coming out perfectly, take a step back and remember that it already is everything it needs to be just by existing.
