The 5A model isn’t new. It’s applied in different ways and is widely applicable. The 5As of AI also isn’t new. In my line of work I’m often asked what my views are on AI, or where I see AI coming in with regards to my line of work or subject matter.
I’ve spoken briefly about it. I’ve published parts of it. But I’ve never really sat down and specifically narrowed down to the As in AI. So here goes. I’m also keen to know what your As are for AI, but here are mine:
1. (Not) Artificial
In a previous post I spoke of a forum discussion on AI where I was invited to keynote. During the breaks I noticed folks in the audience replying to their emails and messages, even though their OOF assistant (Out of Office) was activated. In some cases, they’d redirected to a colleague to take care of things during their absence.
While an OOF assistant is highly efficient, I thought it was rather contrived (artificial) telling everyone you’re unavailable and to accept delays in your response, but still be reading, replying to, and acting on incoming emails and messages – especially when you notify everyone that a colleague is looking after things during your absence, and you’re basically bypassing all arrangements for that.
So, not artificial.
2. Activate
The core theme of our annual flagship event Huawei Connect 2018 was Activate Intelligence.
Almost daily I experience that governments and enterprises vary greatly in IT infrastructure. Many remain in the stage of traditional operations and services, with less than 10% of enterprise applications deployed on cloud. Data utilization by global companies is as low as 13%.
And only 5% of companies have experimented with AI, with less than 1% percent having adopted AI. So we gathered the leading minds in ICT to chart the way forward into the fully connected, intelligent world. And we have activated intelligence.

3. Advance
By 2025, there will be 40 billion smart devices globally and 100 billion connections. A total of 86% of global companies will adopt AI, all enterprises will adopt cloud, 85% of enterprise applications will be on cloud, and data utilization rates will skyrocket to 80%. Intelligence will become as ubiquitous as air, creating enormous opportunities to advance from.
We continued investments in key enabling technologies, such as AI, cloud, big data, IoT, and 5G, and work with global customers and partners to connect the unconnected and bridge the digital divide. Integrating the physical world and digital world.
And in 2019, Huawei Connect 2019 main theme became Advance Intelligence, thus unlocking industries’ full potential without limitations and restrictions.

4. Augment
Our vision is to bring digital to every person, home and organization. TECH4ALL is our digital inclusion strategy. It is designed to reach every person on earth – those who have a voice and those who don’t, those whom can’t see or hear the world we live in. When Augmenting intelligence, two examples come to mind:
StorySign, the world’s first literacy platform for deaf children is a free mobile app that aims to help deaf children read by translating the text from selected books into sign language. Through the power of Augmented Intelligence, StorySign brings these books to life and helps deaf children enjoy learn to read.
Introduction to StorySign
TrackAI: According to estimates of WHO, around 19 million children in the world suffering from visual impairment. Most eye diseases occur in the first five years of life, an age where children are unable to express that they have trouble with their eye sight. So, early diagnosis is vital. In fact, up to 80% of visual impairment can be cured or prevented if caught early enough.
Together with DIVE Medical, we’ve embedded a machine learning model for eye tests into a regular smartphone, fitted with the Kirin 980 chipset. The entire machine learning model of DIVE is built on HiAI 2.0, Huawei’s mobile AI open platform. The solution is able to detect visual impairments in babies as young as 6 months old.

5. Applied
In previous posts, I’ve asserted that even though students are only 20% of the world’s population, they are 100% of our future. In august 2019, I was invited to join and speak at the China-Africa People-to-People Exchange Think Tank Forum in Guangzhou. And just recently, we joined the UNESCO Global Education Coalition.
Education disruption due to the COVID-19 crisis might further widen the educational gaps between regions and countries and aggravate the digital divide. To solve this problem, distance learning via online platforms is one of the important and effective measures. Smooth communication platforms, appropriate teaching resources, as and prompt, convenient support services all serve as the key to large-scale online education.

We continuously share our online education experience with universities and education organizations. We increase investment, enhance digital resource construction, and promote education digitalization to ensure the accessibility of high-quality education. Thus, we apply intelligence.
Tying it all together: A smart device and intelligent connectivity that understands when its user is away from the office or corporate network, so it can automatically re-arrange its settings and align colleagues to act on our behalf when we are OOF is far more intuitive and less artificial than manually activating our OOFs and, at the same time, still replying to messages, ourselves.
Sharing our experience with ecosystem partners will help us further advance and leverage our investments and learnings. Together, we are able to bring digital to every person, home and organization.
Bonus A: Autonomous
By making tech more inclusive and letting it help us to do what we do best even better, we are able to detect visual impairments early on at an age where they cannot yet express themselves. And we can augment the learning to read experience for deaf children.
Eventually all systems and services, networks, and infrastructure will find each other, initiating and optimizing by themselves.
Just as high performance teams work together autonomously and report back on key findings and progress, these autonomous systems and services will do the same.
