I’ve been writing for at least one hour a day for about 3 years and here’s what I learned
Writing became easy. Writing became a habit, so much so, that if I didn’t write at my usual time, I would feel off-kilter. At first, it was hard. I needed a lot of discipline and dedication to start my writing habits. But when it took off, it was far easier to maintain the habit.
Even when I didn’t have access to my laptop, I wrote with a pen and my notepad or typed a few paragraphs on my phone.
Other things I learnt:
1. When dealing with writer’s block, sometimes the only solution is to step back from your work and do something else.
2. Discipline trumps motivation every time. Your motivation might waver but discipline keeps you consistent.
3. Never overplot your novel. You will deviate from the original plot and that is a good thing. Embrace the changes.
4. Write what you want. Yes, if you are writing to become published, commercial appeal might factor into your choice of genre but don’t let the question of whether or not your novel will sell deter your writing goals.
Writing is fun! Learn to enjoy it.
