How to Escape a Paid-for Microsoft Account Lockout

Jan 14, 2026

Many people get locked out of their paid for Microsoft account while still able to boot into Windows. They can use browsers to surf the web, but Office apps like Word stop working because they require sign-in, logging into the Microsoft website fails with error messages and endless runarounds, and you cannot even update your machine since updates require account access too. After dealing with that frustration, I decided it was time to switch OS. I chose Linux. This is how I did it on my mini PC (it might work for you on bigger desktops too).

On my mini PC, to get into the boot menu, I powered on the machine and immediately pressed and held the ESC key. This brought up the UEFI/BIOS setup with a listing of tabs across the top of the page. Under the Boot tab, I disabled Fast Startup (or Fast Boot, depending on the exact wording). Then I used the up and down keys to go down the boot order list to where my MS OS was listed. I highlighted the MS OS entry, pressed the F9 key (look in the list to the right for the F9 explanation), to open it, selected NO to disable/turn off the MS OS. Saved changes and exited, then shut down the machine. Once the machine was shut down, I plugged in my USB drive and restarted the machine normally (no keys held).

Linux from my USB booted directly. Once on the desktop, I saw the Install Linux button in the top left of my screen and clicked it right away. I chose the option to erase disk and install which meant I wanted a full reformat of my C: drive and full installation of the Linux system I wanted. That was it. Windows 11 was gone, and the machine runs much better now with real shutdowns and reboots.
