One thing at a time
It’s a reminder I exclaim
A lesson I think is for my daughters
Who think I can juggle the solar system
Planets swirling around the sun
Each in a days time I say--
To myself
Phrases land upon my tongue
With the weight of gravity
While I bench press my human depravity
Looking up at a ceiling
Those tiles I have counted
Far too many times
I sit up in bed
Then fall back again
Sit back up
I’m counting up to twenty
To work off this gut
But I am reminded of the rut
That I have fallen into
When you wake up in sweat
You realize that sleep
Was not in rest
But anxiety
The mind put to the test
My eyes were closed
But the wheels kept spinning
a body at rest
Stays at rest
It’s a law according to Newton
A mind in motion stays in motion
I think, I just played jazz upon the laws of physics
E minor followed by C squared
Or is that a C 2 chord?
Which is really a 9th chord
But that is Einstein, right?
Newton worked with apples
Perpetually falling on his head
With each strike
A light bulb came on
Well… candle
For Edison had yet to invent the light bulb
Nor Ben Franklin fly his kite in a lightning storm.
Science is knowledge
The neverending questions
Of the world in which we reside
The mind is the continual frontier
In which we pioneer
Our dreams
Are more a reality
Then we are willing to let on
We explore the galaxies
In a rocket ship full of ideas
Our thoughts are on the tip of our tongue
ready to shoot for the moon
Outer space is so damn dark
But just a twinkle of a light
Can be seen for years on end
It is here
That light is the measure of distance
Of how far we have come
And how far we can go
Our minds are uncharted territory
Here we are challenged by the apostle Paul
To take every thought captive
As if the butterflies in our bellies
Required nets
Or the thoughts that percolate
Are something to be contained
For my mind
Refuses to be a prison
And I refuse to be the warden
It’s currently a circus
And I am the head clown
Today I honked my own nose
and laughed
That laugh transmitted to another
Like a virus
Now I am on a mission
To laugh every day
It is my gift to the world
I hope this contagion
Is never eradicated
I hope the paint on my face never fades
I wear my heart on my sleeve
Because it’s the only place it feels home
I have some big shoes to fill
But each day
I lace up
Chin up and smile
