Abigail, Gone but Never Forgotten

Abigail, Gone but Never Forgotten

May 02, 2023

It's with a heavy heart that I am writing here to inform those who have been so kind, that another one of our beloved cats, Abigail, has crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday.

CW: pet illness (up to the picture)
Abigail was an older cat...we're unsure her exact age, since she had been a feral cat in the past, but we believe she was around 15 or 16yo. The last two weeks, she slowly ate less and less each day. She would paw at her mouth, so we thought she had a dental problem. We scheduled a vet appointment last week; the soonest they could get us in was early Friday morning. By the time Friday arrived, Abigail had grown weak and was really wobbly on her feet. I had to force-feed her cat treats (the lickable ones). The vet looked in her mouth and said her teeth were fine, aside from a bit of tartar, and decided to do some bloodwork and give her IV fluids. She suspected advanced kidney failure. As the rest of Friday progressed, Abigail seemed to get even weaker and more confused. I continued to try to feed her and give her water and would just hold her, trying to comfort her. By Sunday, I knew that she might not make it through the weekend... sadly, I was right. She passed in my arms, Sunday afternoon. The bloodwork came back today...it was complete kidney failure.image

I am heartbroken. She was such a small cat, only 6 lbs normally, but she had such a big presence in the home. She was very demanding (something her and Franklyn had in common) and one of our most vocal cats. She would sit on the sink counter and meow the loudest, most pitiful meow, like she was in pain....and as soon as we'd go check on her, she'd switch up to a quieter, more normal meow, like, "Oh hey, there you are, human...now give me water from the faucet." The home will be quieter without her here to demand water, food, treats, and attention. I hope that she was happy here; I hope that she knows how much we loved her; I hope that we gave her a good last 4 years of her life. We tried to do right by her. I will miss her so much.

We are having her cremated, as we did with Franklyn.
(If anyone wants to donate to help with the cost of that, since we just spent $300+ on the vet visit, it'd be appreciated but it's not expected).

RIP sweet Abigail; give nose boops to Sir Franklyn for me.
