I have lived in my apartment for 5 years. It's a decent place in Rego Park. The building is from 1939. It's a big 1-bedroom and I've been happy for the most part. Until the end of 2023 when roaches started appearing. For a full year I lived with roaches in all rooms, surfaces, food, bed etc. My kids terrified. Frankly, I'm still traumatized.
For six months the problem was finally resolved.
Then about 2 months ago the roaches started to appear again - and one month ago a pipe cracked from the apartment above and it escalated fast. Currently living with a bad mold situation, a landlord dragging their feet ... I am in housing court. I can legally move - but can't get approved for a decent new place because the general practise in New York City now is the require yearly income of 40x the monthly rent. For me that means having to show at least $90-$100K. An amount I have never made. An amount I really do not need to keep my children and myself satisfied.
So I'm stuck.
I have created the below Instagram reel to showcase the situation. Any assistance in getting the kids and myself rehoused at least temporary is very much appreciated.
Much love,
Maria-Leena Kerr
