“When reading books or listening to podcasts or taking advice, remember that everyone is biased to their personal history. The world is complex and there is no single path to a success. Look for patterns that are repeated across many successful people, not single stories.”
- James Clear
One pattern that I recognise in lots of successful people is that they constantly self educate themselves. In other words, they read. A lot.
Elon Musk would often read for 10 hours a day when he was a kid according to his brother, Kimbal. He was constantly buried in the Encyclopedia Britannica by fourth grade (age 9 -10). At 14, he read Das Kapital: A Critique of Political Economy by Karl Max. He learned rocket science by borrowing books from his SpaceX co-founder, Jim Cantrell.
Warren Buffet read 600, 750, or 1,000 pages a day in his early investing career. Nowadays, he still dedicates 80% of his day to reading.
Mark Cuban reads more than 3 hours per day.
Steve Siebold interviewed more than 1200 of the world's wealthiest people over the past three decades and he found that they have a common pastime, which is reading to self educate.
