Hundreds of towns and counties in the United States have voted to no longer add fluoride to their water systems. According to the Fluoride Action Network, several Alabama towns have already done so, including Piedmont, Arab, Red Bay and Oxford. The Fluoride Action Network is a group dedicated to “broadening awareness about the toxicity of fluoride through research, education, and advocacy.” The research may be surprising for those who were unaware of the effects of fluoride on the body.
Most notably, fluoride may damage the brain. In 2006, The National Research Council found that fluoride not only interferes with brain function, but also lowers IQ. It has been shown to accumulate in the brain and alter mental behaviors in over 100 animal studies. Over 33 studies concluded that even moderate fluoride exposure lowers IQ in children. Other research is being done on the correlation between fluoride exposure and thyroid function, bone damage and arthritis symptoms.
In the United States, over 70% of the water systems still use fluoridation, solely for the purpose of preventing tooth decay. Interestingly, tooth decay does not go up in communities that no longer add fluoride to their water systems. Most people are actually getting an overload of fluoride exposure now not only because of their drinking water, but because of foods and beverages processed with fluoridated water. And because there has never been a clinical trial that proves fluoride’s safety or effectiveness, people are starting to rethink putting it in the water, especially since the FDA still classifies it as an “unapproved new drug.”
