I just released Waraq 0.1.0, and the code is now open on GitHub.
Waraq (ورق, Arabic for "paper") is a document scanner that runs in your phone's browser. You point the camera at a page, it finds the edges, flattens it and cleans it up, then turns it into a PDF you can search. OCR works in Arabic and English, which was the main reason I built it. Most scanner apps either handle Arabic badly or want a monthly subscription to read your own papers.
Everything runs on your own server. Your documents are plain PDFs in a folder plus one SQLite file. There are no ads, no tracking and no account on someone else's cloud. If you want, it can also keep a copy in your Google Drive.
What's in 0.1.0:
- A scanner with live edge detection, auto capture, batch mode and filters
- Arabic and English OCR with full text search
- Page editing, merge, split and export
- Folders, tags, stars and trash
- Share links with expiry, a password and a QR code
- An installable app, set up with one Docker command

Waraq is free and will stay free. I build it in my spare time, so if it saves you a trip to the copy shop or a scanner subscription, a coffee helps me keep working on it. Starring the repo, opening an issue or telling a friend helps just as much.
Next I'm working on better scanning on low-end phones and more OCR languages. If there's something you'd want in it, reply here or open an issue on GitHub.
Thank you for the support ☕
